MILITARY AND DIPLOMATIC LEVERAGE OF RUSSIA IN THE MIDDLE EAST: SYRIA

With an emergence of new world order, in the post-Obama era, Russia got the stronghold in the Middle East particularly in the Syria by the dramatic shift in Russian foreign policy. To get currency to this idea, the active engagement of Russia has proved testimony from the last few events that Russia has an absolute policy for restoration of a role being a super power by intervention in Syria, as the China and US have preeminence in the contemporary world order. Russia has initiated energy diplomacy to get the task done with the Arab allies. Not only this, Russia takes parliamentary diplomacy for the Middle East to pursue covert ambitions to reach warm Mediterranean water, Russia’s Tartus port has already gotten an unprecedented fame. Moreover, Russia has plenty of issues with the Washington about US coalition in Syria for counter-terrorism against ISIS. Therefore, to get the desired outcomes, Russia has supplied arms, logistic and military to support Arab allies.

Another issue caught fire on the international realm about the Syria preparing for a chemical attack. The US has alleged that Syria has chemical denotation material; however, Russia slams this allegation with the diplomatic acumen. The proxy war is on the horizon to get supremacy in the global affairs on the land of Syria since the outbreak of its uprising in 2011. While this sounds implausible that Russia has direct intervention policy to delimit the role of self-styled Islamic State (IS) rather than underlying rationales to support Assad’s regime. Ultimately, this intrusion in Syria portends a deeper rift and animosity among western and eastern allies.

Russian’s intrusion serves the purpose of destruction of IS as the US – led campaign has an abject failure. The Moscow has waged pre-emptive war against the Islamic State which is posing a formidable threat to international peace and security to all quarters.  All hue and cries are from Pentagon that Syrian war is owing to the manifestation of Russia’s desire to gain leverage in Syria both in military and diplomatic terms. Incidentally, Russian intervention coincides with many events of overriding importance in the Middle East to get more influence of Russia being a proactive actor in the region. For instance: Iran P5+1 nuclear deal; the US withdrawal from Iraq; the French and the New Zealand peace initiative for Israel new state and the Withdraw of Turkey.

These all episodes signify as the US has ‘declining role’ in the Middle East whereas, Russia and China are gaining more influence by the time for the fight in terrorism. Owing to this fact, China and Russia have sent many aircraft carriers, jets, helicopters and anti – submarines. Thus, France and Britain followed suit to mobilize reinforcements and military capabilities. On the flip of coin, the US has sent mere 50 special operation troops in the Syria in the post-2007 era. To sum up, Russia must be taken as the serious active player in the region, as the US will voluntarily abandon its role in the region in no time. Russia must take stringent actions to curb the tentacles of terrorism from the region and nib the IS in the bud.
